We all start somewhere...

Hey Friends!

I am writing this for my friends and whoever to follow, so let me set some blog rules.

1. I am not a writer, so my writing may not be grammatically correct or exciting. If you would like to comment on my writing, I am accepting applications for a volunteer editor. Please apply in the comment section.
2. This is not a guide of any sort. I am not an expert in anything, really, so read everything with the knowledge that I don't know it all.  I will write about things I have done that lead me to success or failure. Some posts may sound instructional, but it's all based on my own opinions.
3. Read it or don't read it, I don't really care. But if you do, thanks! :)

Here we go!
When I moved to NYC last July, I started a blog that lasted about five posts. I wanted to write about fashion and clothes, but my life shifted, and really, I stopped shopping and wearing my nice stuff altogether. Why did my life shift? Well, the move left me with a bunch of changes I was not prepared for. I took a pay cut, my expenses inflated, and I sunk into an emotional low because I just simply did not like living in the city.
I had a few financial goals in place that suddenly became seemingly more difficult to achieve. Initially, the plan was that my girlfriend would move up here, find an apartment for ourselves, and we would get married in the next 5 years. Together we needed to save something like six to ten thousand for her moving (half of that being for the move back if she absolutely hated it), and another twenty to thirty-thousand for a small wedding somewhere. I knew most of that burden would fall on me because I am generally more flexible and better at saving. Very soon after moving, she decides she doesn't think she can do it. Too big of a change. This hurt, and I became even more obsessed with meeting these goals with the idea that maybe if the money is there, the change won't be as scary for her. I spent a lot of time googling things like "how to save more" or "how to make more money," and after almost being suckered into investment program scams, I found a podcast that changed everything called Journey to Launch. From that podcast, I learned of others, like ChooseFI and Afford Anything, and many other resources that sent me down this rabbit hole of "financial independence" (FI). So for those of you reading this that think I am really good with my finances, I've only just started my journey. Most of the changes I've made, and the majority of savings thus far have been from the past year and a half I have been living in New York City. I have set new goals, and while most of them started off being financial, to reach those goals, I realized I needed to prioritize my wellness too. As much as I dislike living in NYC, it really was the only thing that made me focus, consciously, on creating a better life for myself now and for years to come.
So what will this blog be about? It'll be about my adventure to somewhere, hopefully somewhere better. There will be a big focus on finances because that is currently a huge part of my goals. Financially, I'll write about the things I have done thus far, new goals and tools, achievements, and failures. I'll also write about other wellness goals; health and fitness, mental health, whatever else.
Well, that was all over the place... Anyway, I hope you enjoy following along and seeing where this goes. Woo!

A meditation, but for money- Budgeting.

Hey,  I really struggle with knowing what to post about next. So many ideas! After much inner struggle, I decided to post about budgeting, or really expense tracking. Scroll to the end for the gist of it all.  Some people don't like to budget, and for others, it's the only thing that keeps them on track, but the one thing I know about most successful savers is they understand what is happening with their money, whether they use a budget or something else. There are many different ways to keep a budget. Some people use apps, some a simple spreadsheet, and others simply use pen and paper. Many times, people only budget when they are saving for something specific. Going on a trip? Create a Budget. Buying a car? Make a budget. Going back to school? Budget. But too often that is the extent of budgeting. If we aren't saving for something in the near future, we aren't thinking about where our money goes, and a lot of times, this can lead to not having any savings or eve

My First 10k!

Hey! So it's been about 30 seconds since my first post, but that was more of an intro, so that doesn't count, right? Anyway, the reason I even started this today was to share (what I see as) my first milestone! Today, November 2nd, 2019,  I have reached my first $10,000 in my retirement account. And I am pumped! I made it happen faster than it would have, normally, but I couldn't help it, it was too close to resist. In September of 2018, I started a Roth IRA (Individual Retirement Account) to begin my retirement savings. I decided to use a Roth IRA because the designed tax advantage is better suited for my current income and tax burden. I started late in the year and was fortunate to receive a generous gift from my grandparents to help kick off and make my 2018 match without completely depleting my emergency savings. But since 2019, I have been on track to max out this year as well. Every month I deposit $500 to my account straight into the index fund I am currently i
